The tenth anniversary of the annual Canadian Armed Forces Chief Warrant Officer (CAF CWO) Charity Golf Tournament was given a proper celebration this past 24 May with a record $30,173.62 raised to benefit military families.
Selling out quickly, this year’s sporting event saw members of the local business community contribute significant amounts of funds to go towards supporting programs and services designed for military families in the National Capital Region (NCR). As far as milestones go, this particular one was near and dear to Chief Warrant Officer (CWO) Alain Guimond’s heart. Indeed, a key portion of his mandate as CAF CWO has been to ensure that the support provided to military families is continuously enhanced, increasing the positive impact it has on the members and their career within the CAF. This in turn fosters a greater sense of belonging to the community as well as encourages retention of our troops.
“When their families are well supported by our institution, our members are given that peace of mind and that ability to focus on the mission, and thrive as they serve our nation. I cannot stress enough how families truly represent the strength behind the uniform. It is imperative that we continue to direct our efforts into taking good care of our community,” indicated CWO Guimond.
Defence Team members and sponsors came together to raise funds for the Military Family Resource Centre of the National Capital Region (MFRC-NCR) and enjoy a day on the green at the Canadian Forces Support Unit (Ottawa)’s own Hylands Golf Club. Joining them again this year were Canadian Olympians Geneviève Lacasse (hockey) and Cody Sorensen (bobsleigh) for what has become a wonderful sports camaraderie tradition of pairing up golfers with guest athletes.
“I couldn’t be prouder of the tremendous work the organizing committee has done to host our tournament. And I want to thank everyone who’s put in time and energy into making this a massive success,” added CWO Guimond.
“It was an honour to meet the participants and organizers of the CAF CWO Golf Tournament,” mentioned the Board of Directors for the Centre. “The opportunity to see and hear their heartfelt desire to support military families was amazing. Such commitment is inspiring and allows the MFRC-NCR to deepen its community reach with key programs and services.”
Money raised this year will go towards the MFRC-NCR’s food bank program, emergency childcare services as well as mental health services and special needs programs for children. For more information on military family support in the NCR visit the local CAFConnection site.
