Canadians Awarded For Their Service to the United States and Defense of North America

By Colonel William Rowell, U.S. Defense Attaché –

As United Stated of America Vice President Mike Pence said during a recent visit to Ottawa, “The United States and Canada have stood shoulder to shoulder in the defense of freedom for generations.  Our ancestors fought side by side in the great conflicts of the 20th century.  And in recent years, our armed forces have fought against the scourge of radical Islamic terrorism across the Middle East.  And both of our nations have endured great sacrifice.”

On 16 July, 2019, the United States Embassy in Ottawa celebrated the United States’ historic alliance with Canada by awarding thirteen Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members for their contributions to the U.S. Armed Forces.  The annual award ceremony hosted at the Embassy congratulated members who have displayed an exceptional commitment to service.  These CAF members have worked in solidarity with U.S. military counterparts by serving at a U.S. military unit or under U.S. command to provide defense and security.

“Your service has greatly contributed to the defense of North America,” said Richard Mills Jr., Deputy Chief of Mission to the U.S. Embassy Ottawa.

The awards ceremony became a true celebration of friendship thanks to a rousing performance by the historic Canadian Ceremonial Guard following the recognition of the medals.

The United States is proud to call Canada its steadfast ally and I was personally honored by the opportunity to recognize the contributions of the men and women of the Canadian military for their cooperation every day in overseas operations, multinational coalitions, and in military exercises around the globe. Thank you for your service.
