Defence Engagement Program: Expert Briefing Series

A systems approach towards reducing the socio-economic impact of mental/physical health impairments

The Defence Engagement Program is pleased to invite you to an expert briefing by Wolfgang Zimmermann, Director of the National Institute of Disability Management and Research and

President of the Pacific Coast University for Workplace Health Sciences. Mr. Zimmermann’s work is committed to reducing the human, social and economic costs of disability through the implementation of workplace-based reintegration programs, rooted in research in the fields of return to work and disability management, and comprehensive rehabilitation. Mr. Zimmermann has held a wide range of appointments in disability management advocacy including as Chair of the Premier’s Council for Persons with Disabilities and the Advisory Board for Veterans Affairs, and has appeared before Parliamentary and Senate Committees as an expert witness.

Mr. Zimmermann will deliver a 45-minute presentation followed by a 45-minute Q&A on best practices for reducing the socio-economic impacts of mental/physical health impairments. Mr. Zimmermann will contextualize his briefing by providing an overview of the impacts of mental/physical disability in Canada. He will then draw on extensive research to present critical building blocks for successful return-to-work/disability management programs, which can be effective across all organizations. The briefing will provide a comprehensive overview of Return-to-Work/Disability Management programs which will can be applied across DND/CAF and other government departments.

The briefing portion of the presentation will be filmed (no crowd scans), and made available upon request. The Q&A portion will not be filmed and will follow the Chatham House Rule. Following this event, a report of the briefing will be sent out to all invitees. A 5-minute summary video of the presentation will be available to the Defence Team on the Defence Team Video Library. This event will be available via video-teleconference for those outside of the NCR (for more details please contact: DEP-PCD@forces.gc.ca).

If you are arriving from outside of DND/CAF, please arrive 20 minutes early at the NDHQ Mackenzie King Bridge Visitor’s Entrance to allow for registration with security. Please note: you do not need to sign in with the Commissionaires – there will be DEP representatives present.
