Do You Know What Employment Equity Really Means?

By the Defence Advisory Groups –

Employment Equity is not just Human Resources (HR) lingo, it is a federally regulated Act that was passed in 1995. This Act states that employers shall create a welcoming environment for all persons and that no person shall be denied employment opportunities or benefits for reasons other than ability.

The Department of National Defence (DND) has multiple ways for you to get involved in making the workplace a better environment for all. Here in the National Capital Region (NCR) Colonel Banville, Commandant of the Canadian Forces Support Unit (Ottawa) (CFSU[O]), strongly supports the local Defence Advisory Groups (DAG). The Advisory Groups meet on a regular basis to discuss issues impacting the recruitment, retention, development and promotion of people within their communities. Through these discussions recommendations are developed and presented to senior management on how to eliminate these barriers affecting the full contribution of our personnel.

The five local DAGs held Open House sessions at both National Defence Headquarters – NDHQ(Pearkes) and NDHQ(Carling), the second week of September 2019. Employees and members were able to meet representatives from the DAGs in person and sign up for the next meeting. If you were unable to make it out to the Open House, don’t worry! The DAGs welcome new participants all year round. If making your work place better for everyone is something you identify with, please reach out and attend one of the upcoming meetings!
