The National Cadet and Junior Canadian Rangers Support Group (Natl CJCR Sp Gp) hosted a charity Games Day on Friday, November 24 representing the Vice Chief of the Defence Staff Group (VCDS Gp). The event, which lasted several hours, took place at Level One Game Pub in the Byward Market, a venue where customers can play video games and board games. In addition to raising money for the campaign, the fundraiser provided participants with a unique opportunity for team-building and networking.
Despite the many commitments and activities taking place this time of year, the event was a success as personnel from Director General Space, OUTCAN Coordinator, Canadian Forces Liaison Council (CFLC), and Natl CJCR Sp Gp attended. Among the more popular games were Mario Kart®; the cooperative board game, Pandemic®; and the party game, Scattergories®. Personnel from different workplaces played together, which fostered socializing and networking opportunities between units.
“The competitive side of me really enjoyed dominating a colleague from OUTCAN at Connect 4,” mentioned jokingly Capt Isabelle Gilbert from Natl CJCR Sp Gp. “I didn’t fare so well at Scattergories, but it was still a lot of fun.”
In support of the National Defence Workplace Charitable Campaign (NDWCC), the venue owners waived their cover charge, which allowed all proceeds collected to go directly towards the NDWCC.
“The Games Day event was a unique and entertaining NDWCC fundraising idea,” said LS Matthew Schmidt from CFLC. “Similar in nature to the Sports Day event, it was a fun way to raise money while teambuilding with colleagues in a more informal atmosphere. I look forward to attending next year’s event.”
This year marked Natl CJCR Sp Gp’s second Games Day, but this was the first time they opened up their venue to other Level 2 organizations within VCDS Gp. Natl CJCR Sp Gp is considering another Games Day in the New Year with the hope of inviting even more people.
