Learn to Run – New Training Program to Start at NDHQ(Carling)

By Mike Barnes and Isabelle Clement, PSP Ottawa Fitness –

As kids we all learned to run and play. Remember how easy it was (for some of us) to participate in those unorganized aerobic sessions? The only thing required was a quick call to your neighbourhood friends and you would be playing until you were dragged inside by your parents.

Nowadays, with adulthood comes a long list of responsibilities and we often forget to schedule activities that best suit our busy lifestyle. So why choose running?  It is the most accessible form of physical fitness and it is for everyone. Don’t believe us? Keep on reading!

Running has various benefits and certainly gives us chance to unwind and lower our stress levels while getting some fresh air. Although it may seem simple, many people do not know how to run properly, and more importantly how much time and effort is too much.

A structured running program that uses a combination of walking and running for short periods of time and increasing slowly each week is effective to the person who wants to start.

NDHQ(Carling) PSP Ottawa Fitness Instructor Mike Barnes will be conducting a progressive 10 week beginner’s running program which will start on Wednesday, 17 July, 2019 and will wrap up on Wednesday, 18 September,  2019 to help you prep for a potential participation in the Canada Army Run 5K, held this year on 22 September.

What to expect on your first session?

A 15-minute tutorial at the NDHQ(Carling) gym, to brief everyone on the program and other particularities a runner should consider.

On the following Wednesdays, the duration of the sessions will be 45 minutes, including cool-down and static stretching.

A fun training program to get you ready for race day! To find out more contact the PSP Ottawa Fitness team.
