Mental Health

By Colonel Richard Goodyear, Commandant CFSU(O) –

Last week was Mental Health Week in Canada and the Defence Team promoted several initiatives implemented within DND and the CAF. I invite you to read an interview that was conducted with Lieutenant-General Alain Parent, acting Vice Chief of Defence Staff and Co-Champion, on the importance of openly speaking about mental health in the workplace. I also encourage you to read our Editor’s article on the opening of a new Centre of Excellence on Post-traumatic Stress Disorder between Veterans Affairs Canada and the Royal Ottawa Health Care Group.

Congratulations to Lieutenant-General Al Meinzinger on becoming the new RCAF Commander. The Change of Command ceremony between him and the outgoing Commander, Lieutenant-General Michael Hood occurred on 4 May at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum. Among the highlights, Honorary Colonel and CFSU(O) Holiday Concert guest vocalist Loreena McKennitt gave an enchanting rendition of the national anthem, accompanied by our very own Central Band of the Canadian Armed Forces. More change of command ceremonies will be happening later in May and June for the CF MP Group, the VCDS Group, and the Canadian Army.

Warm congratulations as well to the RCAF Pipes and Drums for receiving a Commandant’s Commendation for their outstanding work. Each of them represents us in a poised and professional manner and contribute to the CBCAF being world-class music ensemble.

A reminder for all members residing on site that the Community Council is hosting its AGM on 23 May at 1300 hrs at the chapel. Subject to chain of command approval, all members residing at Uplands are strongly encouraged to attend.

The team at the Guard welcomes your feedback and submissions.  If you have an article, and event or photos you would like to share with your peers within the Defence Community, please contact us at
