By Catherine Villeneuve, The Guard –
A few weeks short of his one-year anniversary in his appointment as the thirteenth Canadian Armed Forces Chief Warrant Officer (CAF CWO), CWO Alain Guimond will have the honour of celebrating an important milestone for the traditional CAF CWO Charity Golf Tournament.
This year marks the tenth anniversary of this annual fundraising event that benefits military families in the National Capital Region, and CWO Guimond couldn’t be prouder of being the one to host it.
“We simply couldn’t do what we do in our service to Canada without the strength and the support of our families,” mentioned CWO Guimond. “Day in, day out, they stand by our side and commit to the mission as much as we do. I for one know that I can count on my wife Johanne to help me be the best CAF CWO I can be and lead our troops and their families in return.”
As anyone within the CAF knows, military families lead a unique lifestyle and deal with challenges that often require tailored, extensive support. From going through frequent deployments to living on Imposed Restriction to putting the spouse’s career on hold for a posting, families quickly learn to juggle a different routine and build exceptional resilience. To support them along the way, Military Family Resource Centres work at the core of the military community to provide programs and services in mental health, social integration, child care and youth development, education and training, and community referral.
An event like this one represents a fantastic opportunity to support our local military families and enjoy a great day out on the green. As tradition goes, the tournament is hosted at the premier Hylands Golf Club at the end of May to kick off the golfing season with a birdie.
“I’m inviting all members of our Defence Team here in the NCR to join me out there and impress their colleagues with theirs skills in hitting a golf ball out of the sandpit,” candidly said CWO Guimond. “Great cause, great sport, great fun.”
The CAF CWO Charity Golf Tournament is open to everyone and will once again this year feature notable athletes among its players. Canadian Olympians, Invictus Games athletes and former NHL players have all joined the team in previous years to show support to our military families. Please email the committee to find out more and register your foursome.
