The Defence Team is on the move! Over 9,000 members are relocating to the newly renovated National Defence Headquarters (Carling); an environment-friendly, modern, world-class facility located in the west end of Ottawa. Transforming our work environment and relocating to NDHQ (Carling) is a significant undertaking that planned properly, can go smoothly and revolutionize the workplace by encouraging a healthy work-life balance as well as promoting efficiency and collaboration. To prepare you for your own move, the Transformation team has created a series of features explaining in detail how to prepare for it and thrive in your new office environment. Your unit or department is moving to NDHQ (Carling), which means you’re going with. Now what does that actually mean for you? How will it impact your work life? In this feature series, we will be looking at summarizing all the information that is out there on the relocation and its effects on personnel. We have divvied it up into six categories, outlining the major aspects of each and providing key details for every item. Our hope is to provide you with the information you need to plan and prepare for your move so that it goes smoothly. So let’s start with the basics.
Located at 60 Moodie Drive, NDHQ (Carling) is situated on 360 acres in Ottawa’s west end. The site is close to two major highways, numerous bike paths, and accessible by public transit via dedicated bus routes.
The complex consists of 10 newly-renovated buildings, inter-connected by a series of tunnels and passageways and includes new fitness facilities, designated recreational spaces, and modernized offices equipped with the latest technology. In addition, enhanced departmental security is a key feature at the new location, and access to the complex is strictly controlled.
The buildings feature plenty of natural light, plants, and water, both indoors and out, making it a healthy and inviting work environment. Staff will benefit from having sit-stand desks, personal storage lockers, improved air circulation, and collaborative spaces for both planned and impromptu discussions. Indeed, NDHQ (Carling) is adopting the Workplace 2.0 environment, focusing on implementing innovative and modern workspaces, and providing technologies that enable new ways of doing business.
Additionally, Alternative Work Arrangements (AWAs) offer ways for members of the Defence Team to achieve a greater balance between their professional and personal lives.
