Record Number of Personnel Participate in NDHQ(Carling) Field Day

By Philippe Iloki, Director Public Affairs Planning and Operations team

On 12 June, 2019 a record number of more than 300 Defence Team members were able to get active through sports activities organized on the NDHQ(Carling) fields and track.

The festivities started at 0830 hrs with opening remarks from Rear-Admiral Simon Page, Patron for women’s soccer in the CAF, and led to a morning of positive competitive physical activities. Softball, soccer, and a walk/run were options available to those participating. Softball and soccer were played on the main sports fields, with 7 soccer and 20 softball teams, each taking turns playing 30-minute games. Over 15 different CAF/DND organizations submitted teams and competed against one another for a chance at potential bragging rights. The day brought great joy and a chance to build team camaraderie as members battled the blazing sun together on their respective teams.

Following the on-field activity, members gathered back inside in order to hear the closing remarks from Rear-Admiral Haydn Edmundson, Deputy Commander Military Personnel Command (MILPERSCOM), and honour Maj Lenora Collins from the Director General Military Personnel Research and Analysis (DGMPRA), who received the Member of the Quarter Award and a Commander’s Coin.

Participants were awarded with complementary pizza and refreshing drinks, which could not have been made possible without the voluntary and organizational help of Assistant Deputy Minister (Human Resources-Civilian) (ADM[HR-Civ]).

Members of the Defence Team understand and recognize the importance of physical fitness and the impact it can have on one’s health. Events like Field Day are critical to ensuring all members incorporate physical activity in their routines and establish good habits that will lead to better health.
