Strong CAF Showing at the Early Bird Triathlon

By Major Philippe Reynolds, National Cadets and Junior Canadian Rangers Support Group –

This past 18 May, 2019 was the Ottawa Early Bird Triathlon in which many of the National Capital Region Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) triathletes participated.

The event included many distances of swim, bike and run, including the Long Sprint Distance Triathlon (500m swim, 33k bike, 5k run), and the Sprint Triathlon (500m, 22k bike, 5km run). Our triathletes competed in these two more classic and advanced triathlons.

The Early Bird Triathlon, being the first triathlon of the season in the Ottawa area and temperatures still being quite cool, this event is unique in the sense that it offers a pool swim instead of an open-water one. This allows triathletes to test their fitness in the water without the fear of taking part in a mass beach start.

The day started a 0820 hrs with the start of both sprint and long sprint distance triathlons. Athletes lined up by pool side and started their 500m, one at a time every 12 secs at the Carleton University Sports Complex. Once done they proceeded to run almost a 1km to get to their bikes and start their 2 or 3 lap courses along Colonel By Drive. There were some pretty strong head winds which gave the flat bike course a nice challenge. At that stage, with the adrenaline going, athletes didn’t even feel the cool temperatures and may have even welcomed it. They finished their race off with an out and back run course, along Colonel By Drive and inside the University Campus.

Leading the way and finishing first overall of the Long Sprint Triathlon was, newly arrived to the NCR, Major Phil Reynolds finishing the course in 1h18min, closely followed by, 2nd place overall Long Sprint, fellow CAF teammate Chief Warrant Officer Marco Côté.

Many other athletes finished very well in their respective age group categories:

  • Colonel John Giguère (3rd place AG – Sprint)
  • Lieutenant-Commander Fred Bard (3rd place AG – Sprint)
  • Major Julie Maille (3rd place AG – Sprint)
  • Major Stéphan Tremblay
  • Major Mylène Leclerc
  • Major Michel Labonté
  • Major (retired) Lise Grondin (4th place AG – Sprint)
  • Captain Pierre-Archer Cournoyer
  • Master Warrant Officer Hugo Asselin (3rd place AG – Sprint)
  • Warrant Officer Jean-François Prévost

An excellent first test! The next team event is Ironman 70.3 Eagleman on Sunday, 9 June, 2019 in Cambridge, Maryland. The team will also have a large presence at the CAF National Triathlon in Gatineau on Saturday, 6 July, 2019. If you’re interested in finding out more about triathlons or joining the team, please contact Lieutenant(Navy) Brenna Roux.
