Total Health and Wellness room recently opened at DRDC – Ottawa Research Centre
ADM (Science and Technology)’s Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC) Ottawa employees have a new opportunity to take care of their mental health and wellbeing at work. DRDC Ottawa is the first research centre under ADM(S&T) to create a Total Health and Wellness Room.
The square, neutral-coloured room has been created for the sole purpose of providing a calm space for staff. Employees are invited to use the room when they are in need of de-stressing, relaxing and recharging. The room is a peaceful and accepting area that reflects our nation’s values of inclusivity and tolerance.
The room has space available for activities such as reading, meditation, prayer and yoga. As mental health is a vital part of a person’s life, mental health and wellbeing resources are available for all who wish to use them. The main goal of this initiative is to create an opportunity for employees to better manage their everyday stress by providing them an appropriate, purpose-made space. The project also aligns well with the Total Health and Wellness program outlined in Canada’s Defence Policy: Strong, Secure, Engaged.
The room is accessible to all staff at DRDC’s Ottawa Research Centre, with an aim to open similar Total Health and Wellness Rooms at other DRDC research centres in the future. Employees can book time in one-hour sections to have time alone to read, worship or just be themselves. The room also features a picture of a beautiful landscape to enable further relaxation.
The Total Health and Wellness Room complements the existing Employee Assistance Program Room. Through initiatives like these, ADM (S&T)/DRDC, strives to create a healthy working environment for its employees’ wellbeing: mental, physical, interpersonal and professional.
