Uplands Awash with Midways and Military Displays at 9th Family Appreciation Days

By the DCFAD Organizing Committee –

On June 14 and 15, 2019 the fields at Uplands were awash with rides, games, expos and camping tents for the 9th annual Defence Community Family Appreciation Days (DCFAD).

While cool wet rain, coupled with strong winds, created dreary conditions in the National Capital region (NCR), the fun never stopped with the event welcoming more than 5,000 people over the two days.

Following this year’s theme of “Sports”, the fields on Breadner Boulevard were flooded with athletic and fitness related activities for all ages. The tide of sports was overflowing throughout the event, as there was plenty of action throughout the grounds.

A steady stream of fun was pouring out of all areas, including a dozen bouncy castle rides and games, midway rides for all ages, military displays and Light Armoured Vehicle (LAV) rides that had every age teeming with excitement, as well as sports-themed games from many of the fantastic partners under our two larger tents! And of course, our train rides were able to run on a fluid schedule, despite the weather.

For those who were looking to camp and seek drier solace, there were over 60 tents occupied by families which also provided quick access to and from the event grounds. The food court had multiple options, including shawarma, pizza, sandwiches, doughnuts, and more!

This event would not have been possible without the many dedicated sponsors and partners, volunteers, and visitors. Thank you to everyone for making this another outstanding event for our Canadian Armed Forces and Defence community families.

Planning has already started for next year’s event, which will mark the 10th anniversary of Defence Community Family Appreciation Days. Our theme will be “Celebrate Together” and will feature many of your favourite activities. Save the date for June 5 and 6, 2020 and we hope to see you there!
